Welcome to Lily's Cottage
Newly available in 2019, Lily's Cottage can be found in the delightful rural village of St John's Chapel in Weardale, County Durham. Lying in the River Wear Valley and within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Weardale is one of the best kept secrets in the UK - beautiful unspoilt views, flowing waterfalls and fantastic walking and cycling country. The area has a diverse mix of wildlife, birds and fauna, mining history, agricultural landscape and rugged moorlands. The fells surrounding the village are home to lapwings, curlews and snipe in summer and the rare Black Grouse can be seen "lekking" there in spring time.
The C2C cycle route, The Weardale Way and The Pennine Way all run close to Lily's Cottage and the area has an incredible choice of cycling and walking routes - from easy riverside paths to steep fells, depending how challenged you wish to be.
Lily's Cottage is a wonderfully central base from which you can explore both the North East and North West - the cities of Newcastle, Durham and Carlisle are all less than an hour's drive away and the Northumbrian Coast, Lake District and Yorkshire Dales can all easily be reached in 90 minutes.
We fell in love with the area when we moved here, having never even heard of Weardale, and we hope that our guests will fall in love with it too. We've refurbished Lily's Cottage to make it a home from home for our guests with everything you might need and we live only a short distance away so we can be on hand if you need us. We can also offer additional services (subject to availability and pre-booking) such as baggage collection and delivery for cyclists and walkers or onward transport if you want to start or end your walk some distance away from St John's Chapel. For those guests using public transport we can also offer a pick up service.
