Today we visited Cragside, a fabulous National Trust property near Rothbury - it’s about 1.5 hours from the cottage, but well worth the trip. At this time of year the rhododendrons are out and the colours are amazing.

Yesterday, having become members of English Heritage, we decided to visit the castle at Barnard Castle. It’s a place with fascinating history and lies in an amazing position alongside the River Tees.
